Code of Conduct

Last updated: 27 February 2026

tl;dr — Be kind. Be generous. Be real. Make space for everyone. If something doesn’t feel right, say so. We’re all here to support each other.

Our Pledge

We commit to making Generalist World a safe, positive, and genuinely useful experience for everyone — regardless of age, appearance, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, nationality, or religion.

We pledge to act and interact in ways that contribute to an open, welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and healthy community.

These standards apply to all Generalist World spaces — online and in person — including our Slack community, Luma events, newsletters, Notion resources, social media channels, and any one-to-one communications where your behaviour has the potential to affect another member’s experience.

This Code of Conduct applies to all members, free and Premium, as well as to Generalist World staff, contractors, event helpers, and sponsors.

Who We Are

We’re a global community of people who identify as generalists — curious, multi-skilled individuals who thrive wearing many hats. We come from many different backgrounds and have had very different experiences, but we’re united in our commitment to support each other.

We define a generalist as someone who is intuitively happiest wearing many hats. Many of us work in early-stage companies, though that’s not a prerequisite. We welcome you to come as you are. This is a space to embrace your generalist nature — not to squeeze into a traditional box.

Please be welcoming of everyone who joins.

Community Values

This Is a Safe Space

We encourage discussion of sensitive and difficult topics so we can support each other, problem-solve together, and share experiences. Because of the sensitive nature of many of these conversations, please keep what is shared in our community spaces — online or in person — confidential unless you have explicit permission from the person who shared it.

Be especially careful about sharing identifying information. Always ask the original poster or speaker if they are comfortable having their post or experience shared more widely. Anything shared in our community is visible to thousands of people — please treat it with care.

Zero Tolerance for Hateful Behaviour

We all play a role in keeping this community positive and inclusive. Discussions, posts, messages, actions, or comments that promote hatred of any kind — including but not limited to racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, biphobia, queerphobia, ableism, and ageism — are not acceptable in Generalist World and may result in immediate removal from our community spaces.

Make Space for Everyone

Speak up and have your voice heard — but also be aware of how much space you’re taking up, and step back when needed. Let people of different backgrounds tell their own stories and share their own experiences. We have a lot to learn from each other.

Assume Good Intent, Then Check

With such a diverse global community, cultures, languages, and communication styles vary enormously. If someone says something that seems ambiguous or unintentionally offensive, your first step should be to ask what they meant rather than assume the worst. Kindness goes both ways — in how we express ourselves and in how we receive what others are trying to say.

That said, repeated or clearly intentional harmful behaviour is not excused by cultural difference.

Value Each Other’s Time and Generosity

Many members give their precious time to offer guidance, advice, introductions, and support. If someone helps you, acknowledge it. Reply to their messages. Write a thank you. Pay it forward when you can. This community runs on generosity — let’s protect that.

Be Honest, Not Self-Promotional

To keep the quality of our community high, we do not allow unsolicited self-promotion.

Not allowed:

  • Promoting your products, services, or offerings without being asked
  • Sharing blog posts or content primarily to drive traffic to yourself
  • Asking members to like, follow, or boost your social media posts

Allowed:

  • Linking to your work in your introduction post — this is a fair and welcome way to share what you’re working on
  • Sharing tools or products you genuinely use and find helpful
  • Asking for feedback or input on something you’re building (please don’t abuse this)

If you’re unsure whether something counts as self-promotion, ask a community admin before posting.

AI-Generated Content

If you share content that has been substantially generated by AI tools, please disclose this. Our community is built on authentic human experience and peer knowledge — AI can support that, but shouldn’t replace it. Do not use AI tools to generate bulk posts, spam channels, or simulate engagement.

In-Person Events

We follow the same standards at our in-person events as we do online. The following additional guidelines apply:

Respect personal space. Always ask for permission before touching someone, taking their photo, or filming them. Consent given once is not consent every time — ask again each time.

Alcohol. If you are consuming alcohol at an event, please do so responsibly. Being drunk is never an excuse for hurtful, abusive, or harassing behaviour. Never pressure someone to drink.

Sexual consent. A person who is inebriated cannot consent to sexual behaviour. Any sexual harassment or assault will result in immediate removal from the event and permanent ban from the community.

Promoting violence or hatred. Any member who promotes violence or hatred at an in-person event will be warned and asked to change their behaviour. A second incident will result in removal. More serious violations — such as threatening or harassing another member — may result in immediate removal without warning.

One-to-One and Off-Platform Behaviour

This Code of Conduct extends to direct messages and any interactions between members that originate from or relate to the Generalist World community — even if they take place on other platforms such as LinkedIn, WhatsApp, or email. If your behaviour toward another member outside our spaces has the potential to harm their experience within the community, we may take action.

Content Ownership and Sharing

Members retain ownership of the content they share in our community spaces. Please do not reproduce, screenshot, or share another member’s posts, advice, or contributions outside the community without their explicit permission. This is especially important for posts shared in sensitive or confidential discussions.

Enforcement

We take all reports seriously and will investigate them promptly and fairly.

Our process:

In most cases, a first violation will result in a warning and a private conversation with a community admin. We want to give members the chance to understand the impact of their actions and make things right.

A second violation, or a first violation that is serious enough, will result in removal from the relevant community space or from the community entirely.

Actions we deem particularly serious — including but not limited to harassment, threatening behaviour, sharing another member’s private information, or any form of sexual misconduct — may result in immediate and permanent removal without warning. The admins reserve the right to make that call without discussion if the situation requires it.

Appeals. If you believe an action taken against you was unjust, you can appeal by emailing hello@generalist.world. We will review your case and respond within 14 days.

How to Report Something

If you’ve seen, heard, or experienced something that doesn’t feel right, please tell us. You can report anonymously if you prefer.

  1. Email us at hello@generalist.world — explain what happened and, if possible, include screenshots or a link to the relevant message or thread
  2. At an in-person event — approach a member of the Generalist World team directly

All reports are handled confidentially. We will not share your identity with the person you are reporting without your consent, except where required by law.

A Note on This Document

This Code of Conduct is a living document. It will evolve as our community grows and as we learn from our experiences together. If you have thoughts, additions, or feedback, we’d love to hear from you — email hello@generalist.world.
