I joined Generalist World because of Milly’s enthusiasm for changing the narrative around being a Generalist – a cause I wanted to experience.

Milly has brought together everyone who understands being a generalist… or is looking for their home… and everyone cares and supports each other in amazing ways.

I was pretty lost. I’m not found yet, but I’ve made more progress in the last few months than the last 20 years.
Milly did that.

Having a squiggly path is a superpower!
The old world of work is collapsing. The ladders we were told to climb are shaking. The rules we followed—pick one thing, stay the course, don’t diverge—are failing us.
And in the space between what was and what’s coming, a different kind of person is needed. Not the specialist. Not the one who dug deeper into a single rung. But the one who was told their whole life they were “too much,” “too scattered,” “too unfocused.”
The generalist.
The Queen of the Forest is a parable. It follows Māia, a worker in a city built on climbing, who discovers something impossible—and walks toward it anyway.
It’s a story about what happens when the old world starts burning. About finding your way home. About the courage it takes to leave.
I wrote this for everyone who was told they were “too much.” Too scattered. Too curious. Too hard to put in a box.
From Milly Tamati, founder of Generalist World and guide to 100,000+ people navigating the new world of work.
How this book will help you
Name what you’ve been feeling
That creeping sense that the old rules aren’t working anymore. That you were never meant to fit the box they made for you.
Show you’re not alone
Through Māia’s journey, you’ll recognise your own. The doubt. The dismissal. The quiet knowing that there’s another way.
Give you permission
To stop apologising for your range. To trust the instincts you’ve been told to ignore. To walk toward something the old world tried to erase.
Offer a new story
Not of climbing, but of growing. Not of ladders, but of roots.

Hey! I’m Milly. The human behind the book
Throughout my life, I’ve been a tour guide, a startup operator, a writer for a Japanese publication about tourism, a short film producer for women in construction, a community builder, and creator… and who knows what’s to come?
So in 2022 I posted a message on LinkedIn to see if I was alone. I was not. Hundreds of people reacted to my post, sharing their similar experiences. I then decided to create Generalist World, a community that brings together people who have diverse skills and careers.
Since then, 45,000+ people read our newsletter each week, with 75,000+ more learning from our content on socials.
My career has been squiggly and it took me WAY TOO LONG to see this for what it is: an absolute golden asset.
I’ve exchanged with hundreds of Generalists and now, I know I’m not alone, and I also know how to turn your generalism into a superpower!
